  • Finland, 1920’s. The angelic preacher Maria Åkerblom leads her followers to Helsinki, among them the adoring teenager Salome. Maria is soon sentenced to prison, accused of various violent crimes. The faith of her devout followers is rewarded as Maria makes a daring escape and rejoins them. Meanwhile, Salome has befriended a local street girl, Malin, and is now torn between her newfound freedom and the ever more dangerous Maria’s all-consuming love.

Director’s Statement: Maria’s Paradise is a story of two women, teenage girl Salome and the charismatic leader of a religious cult, 27-year-old Maria Åkerblom. Two interesting female leads, intense story with a lot of beauty on the surface but horror underneath. The film deals with the relationship between love and power: how wonderful it is to relinquish all responsibility, to love and admire unconditionally. Salome’s feelings for Maria largely stem from her need to earn the love of an unpredictable, God-like mother. Underneath is a deep-rooted craving for acceptance, which can lead to a total loss of self.
