Prayer Image

Fifty years from now society has changed dramatically: due to energy and political crises people have been forced to leave the cities, populate deserted areas and return to the way of yore, digging into the lost knowledge of making do on your own. Iris (12) and Mikael (12) live on a small island guarded by menacing militia. The adjacent countries are facing gory battles, and crowds of refugees are constantly on the move. Mikael introduces Iris to religion, the forgotten knowledge he has learnt from his preacher father. The children escape the surrounding threats by playing with religion. Their game turns into tribulation as they start to experiment with prayer – instead of saving someone they end up killing a man.

Director’s Statement: The cliffs are sharp, the horizon open. In the village the houses huddle together, taking cover, like their inhabitants. Birds fly through the ceiling of what once was a church. And then there is Mikael, telling Iris that if she says certain words in a certain order she will get what she wishes for. Feeling tricked, Iris prays for Mikael’s peril instead. To me Prayer is a thrilling story about longing for miracles, fragility of trust and how we deal, or fail to deal, with the misdeeds we do.

Divine Consultants Image

Joy stands at a crossroads. Domestic problems arise between Joy’s parents and their home is being watched. Joy suspects her family is in danger but the parents don’t listen to her. Joy can choose to either continue to uncover the mystery, or to look for her parents in afterlife. Is she the hero humankind needs, or is she just an orphan who wants her family back? Can she stop this murderous organisation? Let’s hope so, as our souls depend on her.

Director’s Statement: Divine Consultants combines adventure, mystery and social criticism in a highly innovative form – something we have not seen before on silver screen, online and television. It’s an entertaining sci-fi adventure comedy for teenagers and young adults.

Diva of Finland
2019
Diva of Finland Image

Diva of Finland is a dark comedy about girl envy. 18-year-old Henna becomes obsessively envious of a new girl in town, Silja. Stalking Silja gives Henna an eye injury and a temporary sight loss in the middle of the dark polar night. All Henna’s future plans are put on hold and every nightmare seems to come true. Henna ends up acting on her fears and creating a mess that hurts others, especially Silja. When her sight is restored, she decides to hide it from the others. From behind her sunglasses she gets a chance to observe the world without anyone knowing. Henna sees things that make her understand the power of her own actions and intentions. Diva of Finland is an unserious film about the serious subject, aimed at young people – both in age and at heart.

Director’s Statement: Diva of Finland is a drama comedy about the painful subject of girl envy. It shines a light on darker sides of being a young woman, while also describing the mentality of northern Finland, which is where I grew up. The film is defined by the effortless, dedicated work of the main cast. I wanted to find actors from the authentic environments of the story, and we were blessed with a unique group of young, new talents. I hope this film finds its audience and encourages them to live bravely.

Aurora
2019
Aurora Image

One night at a hot-dog stand in Finnish Lapland, a commitment-phobic party animal, Aurora, meets Iranian Darian. Darian suddenly asks her to marry him. Darian needs to marry a Finnish woman to get an asylum for himself and his daughter. Aurora turns him down, as she is busy working as a nail technician and plans to move to Norway, away from her shit life. However, after meeting his sweet daughter, Aurora agrees to help him. As Aurora introduces numerous women to Darian, the two of them grow close. When the perfect wife candidate comes along, Darian and Aurora are faced with a difficult choice: pretend to be happy or to finally stop running.

Director’s Statement: I wanted to make a quality film with silly and warm humor, and by reaching towards sensitive cinematic poetry with some honest dark shades and romantic comedy. To draw a picture with a loose hand of the fragile moments of falling in love in a hopeless situation. To show the inner reality of a young woman in the arctic ghetto coping with inherited barriers against love and life. To show northern magic instead of superimposed exoticism. To salute the biggest force of nature: love.

Club Colombia
2018
Club Colombia Image

The FARC guerrillas and the Colombian government have decided to end the longest conflict in the Western world. However, peace still seems to be a distant idea in a torn¬ society where everyone has his own perception about law and morality. Meanwhile, ex-FARC Ernesto (who desperately tries to change the society), Colombian Vice-President, furious right-¬wing politician, poor cocoa farmers and a descendant of Spanish conquistadors explain the underlying reasons of the conflict, uncovering the roots of Colombia’s systematic inequality. The film concludes with 2018 presidential election, when the future of the country will be determined. If the desired changes are impossible, how can Ernesto resist the temptation to rise up in a justified rebellion?

Director’s Statement: The current situation in Colombia allows us to examine our ability to live in peace in the situation when many people don’t want to acknowledge or even address the reasons why the war started in the first place. We are interested in what it is that makes humans justify illegal actions. In a country where political leaders don’t respect the people and society is nowhere near equal, when did doing the “wrong” thing became justified? Where is the line between right and wrong?

Who Made You?
2019
Who Made You? Image

Artificial intelligence and new technologies are reaching our mental and physical existence like never before in the history of human kind. The film is a journey that leads us to the world of cyborgs, sex robots and androids. It challenges us to face our values, ethics and rethink our position. The main character of the film is Dr. Michael Laakasuo whose work morality and AI has gained recognition both nationally and internationally. We followed the progress of his project called Moralities of Intelligent Machine. The film also introduces other central figures of the current debate such as cyborg Neil Harbisson, developer of AI for sex robots Sergi Santos, Jowan Österlund who encourage people to put microchips for themselves, Prof Hiroshi Ishiguro android robot and Prof Yukiyasu Kamitani who use artificial intelligence to decode thoughts for images. Displaying the visions of the experts and encounters between people and robots, the film captures a glimpse of our near future.

Director’s Statement: This film project started from a realization that I am no longer sure what is science fiction and what is reality. Artificial intelligence and robotization is developing in staggering speed. The whole mankind is going to experience one of the largest changes right now and it is captivating but also frightening. I started my journey of exploration the zeitgeist of the current era. The film asks what the development of AI means to us as human beings? What are the values we want to hold on to? What we should be aware of?

Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway

Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway Image

It’s 2035 and Tallinn, now a megalopolis, is managed by ubiquitous computer program called Psychobook. Undercover agents Gagano and his boss Palmer Eldritch are tasked with protecting Psychobook from any threats. When a dangerous virus called “Soviet Union” is detected, the agents are assigned the mission to destroy it. During the mission, when accidentally inhaling a strange gas-emitting substance, Gagano becomes trapped in Betta Ethiopia, a parallel reality where he is considered to be the true heir to the throne. As he tackles the challenge of becoming the new Emperor, a battle breaks out in Betta Ethiopia between the Prime Minister, a firm supporter of the state apparatus and Psychobook, and Reverend Roy, a sect leader who promotes the free use of the substance for truthseeking and liberation purposes. When Gagano befriends Roy Mascarone, a Jesus Christ-like figure, he will learn how to use the substance to travel within realities, knowledge that will finally lead him to the ultimate truth.

Director’s Statement: Dystopian sci-fi and Afrofuturism reflect on the processes of globalization from a hypothetical African future that is nothing more than a projection and exaggeration of our satiric and grotesque present. Globalization in Africa is the same as in the rest of the world: stark, naked capitalism.

Games People Play
2020
Games People Play Image

An ensemble comedy about a group of old friends in their 30’s regressing to their teenage roles over a course of a weekend. A reunion takes place at a villa celebrating a surprise birthday party for Mitzi. The weekend starts ominously when it turns out that Mitzi has just divorced. The group’s confusion mounts when Mitzi’s best friend, the subject of Harde’s big love Veronika arrives with a new boyfriend, Mikael, a Swedish film star, whose presence undermines other men. Underlying tensions swarm, while the group continues its rituals: the lavish dinners, the sauna, the booze. A debate over the golden past grows into a game of the apocalypse as they establish a “new society”, each choosing their role in it. During this game, the fulfilled and unfulfilled loves are awakened and questioned.

Director’s Statement: Games People Play is a slapstick/Chekhovian ensemble comedy with Nordic sensibility. I grew up in a working-class family and – thanks to the Finnish welfare state – spent my youth as a chameleon alongside kids from well-off cultural families. I’m more or less one of them now, but my background is crucial in how I see the world. When writing about class I believe it’s necessary to be very truthful and critical. The tone I am aiming for is a combination of ridicule with heart and darkness with warmth – a heartwarming satire if you wish.

The Oasis of Now
2020
The Oasis of Now Image

Little Ramin Mehdipour is enjoying a perfect summer in a small Finnish town, just like any boy his age. His world revolves around family, friends and the nature around him, and in a few weeks he’s about to go to a new school: junior high. The Mehdipour family has applied for asylum, but the Finnish Immigration Service has decided against it. This fractures the lives of Ramin and his family, but the school year is about to start and life must go on. The Mehdipours use their last chance to appeal, but continue their everyday lives, fueled by their exceptionally positive outlook and attitude. Ramin is on the verge of innocence and adulthood, about to bid farewell to his childhood as he looks for his own voice.

Director’s Statement: The Mehdipours are asylum seekers, but their irresistible thirst for life reminds the viewer that being an asylum seeker is not an identity. Ramin and his family define the scale of my film: I am portraying basic human emotions in all their simplicity and richness. I am telling a story about this family’s dignity, which cannot be destroyed by unseen and unjust forces. With this film I want to celebrate life and humanity which cannot be defeated.

My Sailor, My Love
2020
My Sailor, My Love Image

A widower falls in love with his home aid. His middle age-aged daughter does not approve of the relationship. Since Howard, 75, retired his job as sea captain, his daughter Grace has visited regularly. But Howard is stubborn in his isolation and doesn’t want any “help”. When Grace hires him domestic help, Annie, Howard is at first reluctant and hostile. Grace loses her job as a nurse and her husband is divorcing her. She tells Annie that her employment will soon end. She has applied for Howard to stay at a home for the elderly. When Howard learns about that, he asks Annie to move in. They fall in love, and Grace can’t take this. She feels like she’s again losing a father she never had. She wants to win him back.

Director’s Statement: My Sailor, My Love is a film about the need of three people to be loved and to get a second chance in life. The joy and energy of this film comes from this happiness of being loved. But also the anger and disappointment that love can easily turn into once rejected. We are accustomed to seeing love stories about how love warms or hurts a person when it’s experienced for the first time. But how does it feel when a person knows with certainty that it’s the last time?

Magic Lives of V

A young woman, Veera, haunted by her childhood traumas is trying to become more independent through live role-playing. As she guides herself and her mentally disabled brother through the world of multiple roles and identities, witches and wizards, she finally finds the courage to face the demons of her own past; namely their abusive father.

Director’s Statement: I have always been interested in the line between fact and fiction. In what way people in documentaries are real or how much they are just playing roles they believe to be true? When I met Veera, the main character of this film, I understood immediately both cinematic and philosophical potential of the subject. For once I could move freely from fact to fiction without ethical dilemmas, because this is the subject of the film; the way my characters do it themselves in order to cope.

Future Remains
2020
Future Remains Image

Future Remains is an amusing and emotionally engaging film about an idealists’ vision for the future. The Nordic Union of 2030 is a society of sustainable living, sharing economy and social equality –in essence how our society would look like if we as humans suddenly became good. But who was this idealist and what was he trying to tell us? And how does his visions resonate with us today?

Director’s Statement: By remaking Henrik’s vision for the year 2030 I want to take the viewer on an amusing, visually attractive and emotionally engaging journey where we reflect on the challenges and potential of our contemporary society from a human perspective. The fictional scenes will have the visual style of a reportage from 1980 but include typical phenomena from our time. The viewer will be the one to put the pieces together. Things might have a funny name, for example Teda – an abbreviation from the Swedish words “telefon” and “dator” but actually it’s what we know today as Internet.

Maria's Paradise
2019
Maria

Finland, 1920’s. The angelic preacher Maria Åkerblom leads her followers to Helsinki, among them the adoring teenager Salome. Maria is soon sentenced to prison, accused of various violent crimes. The faith of her devout followers is rewarded as Maria makes a daring escape and rejoins them. Meanwhile, Salome has befriended a local street girl, Malin, and is now torn between her newfound freedom and the ever more dangerous Maria’s all-consuming love.

Director’s Statement: Maria’s Paradise is a story of two women, teenage girl Salome and the charismatic leader of a religious cult, 27-year-old Maria Åkerblom. Two interesting female leads, intense story with a lot of beauty on the surface but horror underneath. The film deals with the relationship between love and power: how wonderful it is to relinquish all responsibility, to love and admire unconditionally. Salome’s feelings for Maria largely stem from her need to earn the love of an unpredictable, God-like mother. Underneath is a deep-rooted craving for acceptance, which can lead to a total loss of self.

One-Off Incident
2019
One-Off Incident Image

A collection of short films for the web, an episodic feature film and an impact campaign, developed by a collective of fifteen female filmmakers. One-off Incident discloses and deconstructs the invisible use of power towards women both in private lives and in the society. Moments in life that are called one-off incidents. But how come have all women experienced them?

Directed by: Reetta Aalto, Tine Alavi, Alli Haapasalo, Ulla Heikkilä Sonya Lindfors, Inari Niemi, Anna Paavilainen, Kirsikka Saari, Aino Suni, Miia Tervo, Elli Toivoniemi, Jenni Toivoniemi.

Directors’ Statement: The films show how the culture of surviving on your own and keeping silent is possible. The protagonists of the film – girls and women – experience all their “one-off incidents”. Sexual harassment and rape culture is something they all have to get used to. Those attitudes are found not only in streets, bars and work places, but also in a courtroom and on a stage of a theatre. Almost every woman has experienced something similar and learned to cope with it by themselves.

Birds of a Feather
2020
Birds of a Feather Image

Birds of a Feather is a horror drama about a 12-year old gymnast girl, Tinja, who does everything to fulfil her mother`s high expectations. One day Tinja finds a strange bird’s egg and starts hatching it until out bursts a bird-like creature. Tinja names the horrifying monster Alli and hides it in her closet. Like baby birds, Alli only eats Tinja’s vomit, and after each feeding it gradually transforms into Tinja’s doppelganger. Tinja’s buried aggression and jealousy pushes Alli into increasingly violent attacks until no one is safe.

Director’s Statement: Birds of a Feather is an smart horror drama for adults. The main character Tinja’s family scenes are picture beautiful, but there’s something wrong though you can’t really point out what. The horror of the film lies in a waiting atmosphere, in the fear that at any moment this perfect harmony could be violently torn apart. Being afraid of losing control is something also I can identify with. To think if all my worst impulses and fears came to life and I could no longer control them.

School of Hope
2019
School of Hope Image

Only 30 families remain of the big nomadic tribes of Dahra in Morocco. A decade-long draught has forced them to settle on the foothills of Atlas Mountains. They struggle not only against the harsh nature, but also against Government indifference; they have no health care, no roads, no schools. The nomads of Dahra have decided not to give up and move to cities. In order to ensure a better future for their children, they have built a small school and call it School of Hope. But the draught continues to threaten their hope. Will they find a solution that will let them preserve their way of life?

Director’s Statement: I have followed the life of the last nomadic tribes of Atlas for more than two years now. The plight of this micro-community is emblematic of some of most challenging contemporary issues of our time, including climate change, urban migration, education and preserving cultural heritage. The issues facing this nomadic tribe in Morocco echo the challenges facing vulnerable communities around the world.

Aalto
2020
Aalto Image

Aalto tells the story of Alvar and Aino Aalto, Finnish masters of modern architecture and design. This enchanting couple shared their lives and great passion for organic human-scale architecture. Together they were creating a better and more democratic modern world. In their philosophy, the ͞little human͟ was always at the center of the work. Alongside the personal story, the film paints a bigger picture of modernism through the critical thinking and revolutionary ideas the Aaltos brought into architecture since the 1930s. The film takes the viewer on a cinematic journey to iconic buildings and designs all over the world created by them. The film provokes a dialogue between the Aaltos ́ intentions and contemporary voices of the people who interpret the meaning and legacy of their work.

Director’ Statement: There are two layers in the film: “the personal” tells about the intimate life and tension between Alvar and Aino, two pioneering colleagues creating something exceptional together. “The professional” we approach through the archive material (letters, drawings, and interviews) and interviews with contemporary people: foreign architects and researchers who analyze Aalto’s buildings and design, while we travel around the world to study their legacy.

The Happy Worker
2019
The Happy Worker Image

The heroes of our film have a steady, respected job that is not physically demanding and comes with a nice salary. They should feel lucky. Yet they are among some of the most unhappy people working. On their morning commute to the office they dread the day ahead: They have a pile of work waiting for them, but they probably won’t get it done. Their day will be consumed by constant interruptions, pointless meetings, binfulls of irrelevant emails and ever more frequent unfathomable corporate mission statement briefings. The work that they need to be doing will be pushed forward. So they take the work home. A 2013 Gallup study conducted in 142 countries found that only 13% of workers felt motivated in their work. In a similar study in the US it was found that only 45% of office time was spent on the “real job”. In Britain, 37% of workers thought that their job was utterly meaningless. This is a problem that affects hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of people. In the 1930’s John Maynard Keynes, one of the greatest economists of the 20th century, predicted that within a century a higher level of education and the automation of the work place would mean that people would only have to work 15-hour weeks. The rest of our time could be spent on other activities. We have made incredible advances in education and automation, yet most people struggle to get their work done within an 8-hour day. How is this possible? Why do we have less time to do our work, not more?

But when his application is rejected, Linda needs to find a way to cope with her loss. Luckily her mother is there for her, and so is her music.

Entrepreneur
2018
Entrepreneur Image

Entrepreneur is a universal nature documentary about the ethos of being an entrepreneur. This warm film portrays humans in the middle of their ordinary everyday survival. The main protagonists come from two different backgrounds. Our first protagonists are a Felliniesque family, going from one village to another, trying to sell meat from a small meat truck and also run a tiny funfair business. While they are counting coins after a hard day’s work, the other pair of entrepreneurs of the film, modern, well-educated women from the capital, are dealing with millions. They have invented a revolutionary vegetable protein product called Pulled Oat. At the end of the film they have a multi-million business and they are both millionaires, but have they also made a world a little bit better?

Director’s Statement: At this moment in time it feels interesting to look at the society from the viewpoint of an entrepreneur, since entrepreneurship will be part of the lives of a growing number of people. This means not only success stories, but also the birth of a“new poor” left without social security protection or pension provision. Some of the new entrepreneurship is so-called “forced entrepreneurship” that isn’t financially reasonable.

No Road Home
2018
No Road Home Image

The protagonist of the film, Charles, is searching for his identity. After living as a refugee in Finland for 6 years, he travels back to the border of Rwanda and Congo to meet his mother and his family in a Kiziba refugee camp. He wants to go with his wife and oldest daughter, 9-year-old Nadine, but something happens: his wife escapes from the Helsinki airport with the girl. Charles’ trip turns into a long letter to his daughter, in which he tries to explain where he comes from, what happened before he and his family they became refugees and why his wife didn’t want her to come to Rwanda. The film is also about relationship between a father and a daughter. As a stranger who doesn’t even share a common language with his Finnish daughter, Charles doesn’t know where he belongs. He speaks Kinyarwanda, Swahili, French and English but Nadine speaks Finnish. In this poetic film, themes of identity, racism, family and love come together forming a road trip through Rwanda, still healing the scars of genocide.

Director’s Statement: With my film I want to show the sense of not belonging anywhere, and how refugees feel when facing the ignorance of Finnish people. If nobody talks to you and says ‘hello’, you may never become a part of the society. It’s important to learn to understand people coming from different cultures and backgrounds, instead of just passing each other by. Especially as only two generations ago we were facing similar struggles in Kainuu to what people are experiencing now in Congo. I hope that my film serves as a business card, encouraging people to become interested in other lives, stories and backgrounds. Now, when nationalism is used as a political tool, we should expose the myth behind it. There isn’t such thing as a real Finn.

Memory of Water
2021
Memory of Water Image

In a dystopian future world stripped of freshwater, Noria, an idealist tea master’s daughter, finds out that her strict father guards a secret freshwater spring. While the dystopian military government tightens its leash, Noria must learn to navigate alone after her father dies. From his things she discovers a deadly secret: there may still be more clean water left in an irradiated place called the Lost Lands. Noria’s cynical and downtrodden best friend Sanja is the only one she can trust – until Noria meets the stranger Taro, a kind man who comes to their village to find a solution to the water problem. As Noria’s secrets push her and Sanja apart, she grows closer to Taro – only to find out he’s lied about everything. Noria must escape, save Sanja and find out if there is still some hope in a world ravaged beyond recognition.

Director’s Statement: I intend to create futurism with minimalism. Use emptiness and bare geometrical compositions in the visual approach. Lapland has this unique landscape perfect for it. With layers that hide and reveal elements, I want to create a sense of tension and danger constantly present in totalitarian societies. I also see the film as a strong combination of realism and fabricated imagery. I want the overall mood, feel and look to be closer to a documentary than an uplifted science fiction film we immediately think of.

Vinski and the Invisibility Powder (Vinski ja näkymättömyyspulveri)
2019
Vinski and the Invisibility Powder (Vinski ja näkymättömyyspulveri) Image

Based on the well-known and beloved book Vinski of the Town by the Finnish author Aapeli, Vinski and the Invisibility Powder is a contemporary fantasy-action-comedy for the whole family. The story takes place in Hömpstad – an imaginary town. Vinski, a 10-year-old boy, feels like an outsider among people his own age and even his single mom Krista. He meets a mysterious pharmacist, who gives him a bottle of magical powder. A powder that allows you to become invisible and walk through walls. At first, Vinski uses his new powers for practical jokes, but with the help of the pharmacist, soon he starts to help local people. While it’s fantastic to have powers of a superhero, unfortunately the secret of invisibility soon arises the interest of a bunch of crooks.

Director’s Statement: Vinski and the Invisibility Powder is based on a Finnish classic Koko Kaupungin Vinski. I read it when I was a kid and loved it! This magical story is universal – who wouldn’t want to be invisible and to be able to walk through the walls? This film is more about becoming a superhero than being one already. Which, predictably, makes for a fantastic comedy material!

Time Out
2019
Time Out Image

Time Out is a comedy-drama set in the harsh landscape of the cold Nordic winter. It’s a story about a father and a son, Harri and Simo, who move into the small village of Harmaaketo, which consists of little more than a church, a cemetery and a school – and snow, as far as the eye can see. The local villagers are steeped in envy, their small social circles and the cold climate, all with a pretty twisted perspective on life. Harri, who had to leave his priestly office and his wife behind in his old home town, must now find a new direction in life. But little by little, the brooding mood of the village, along with Harri’s pride and shame about his past, start to build up and prevent him from finding his way. At the same time, Simo gets into trouble at his new school, and all hope seems to be lost. Do you really have to hit rock bottom before you can start building something new?

Director’s Statement: Time Out is a humane and touching description of a father who is looking for justice and a new beginning for his son and himself. The name of the film comes from the method used in dog training, where a dog is isolated from the rest of the community until it learns to know its place at the bottom. In the story the main character Harri faces the same destiny in his new community. But then something unexpected happens and things turn upside down. What is Harri going to do next; will he stop the game or is it getting even harder with stakes?

Siblings
2022
Siblings Image

Jenna and Joni, twins in their 30’s living in Helsinki, find out that they have a stepsister, Jóna, living in Iceland. Their first meeting in Reykjavik changes the lives of them all. Jenna becomes pregnant and moves to Iceland. Jóna tries to keep distance from her Finnish siblings but Jenna’s children and Joni’s sickness connects her to the twins. When they recount the events seven years later, they all remember things differently. Through the years, the siblings shape each other. Conservative Jóna quits her job and has an affair. Impulsive Jenna becomes responsible and conciliatory, while after recovering from cancer, Joni learns to love conflicts.

The film is shot over the course of seven years (2014-2020) with a minimal crew.

Director’s Statement: When you become middle-aged, you start to realize that relationships don’t get easier with age. You gain life experience, but also end up repeating your old mistakes. This can be exhausting. Our continuous incompleteness is an endless source of material for drama. Stories are road signs when we stumble with our ways of doing things. Siblings is an attempt to understand our struggle between independence and the need to belong as we determine the concept of a family again.

Carnival Pilgrims
2019
Carnival Pilgrims Image

Pilgrims dragging heavy cross through Via Dolorosa… Couple in hysterical frenzy at the sight of Santa Claus… Struggle for the perfect selfie with Mona Lisa… Backpackers arriving to the village of rumoured cannibals… Another day is about to begin in the theme park Planet Earth. A day exactly like the one before. Same routines, same rituals, always exciting, never surprising. Here adventures are safe, myths real, paradises earthly and the tourist is the hero. We’ve all been there. Every modern person travels. We all know what tourism is all about… Or do we? Carnival Pilgrims is an exploration on the essence of the tourist experience, taking a hard look at what is in fact going on at these contemporary pilgrimage sites. Where does this restless desire to rest far away comes from?

Director’s Statement: We are so busy dreaming about where, when and how, that we often fail to ask why. When researching the tourist experience, I was baffled how little is known about the subject matter. And yet its clear that tourism is extremely important for us. Just look at the way we display our travels in our living rooms. Souvenirs are right next to the crucifix, chairman Mao, children’s photos… In this project I see unique opportunity to probe deep into phenomena that is utterly familiar, yet suspiciously unexplored.

Pony and Birdboy
2018
Pony and Birdboy Image

Mai, nicknamed Pony, is a seven-year-old city girl who wears a pony muzzle over her face and a bridle around her neck. Pony is about to start school in the fall, and that worries her. Fortunately, Pony meets an imaginary friend named Birdboy, an eccentric, bird-like boy, who loves commercials and buns and hates the letter ‘R’Birdboy has a solution to every problem. Together they start looking for a solution to Pony’s growing problems about starting school and try to find a way to avoid going to school altogether. There are no limits when this duo sets off on their adventures. The film is based on Veera Salmi’s popular children’s book. The rich humour and crazy anarchistic twists and turns have made it a children’s favorite. The book was published in 2012 and was an instant success.

Director’s Statement: The central point in the story is that children don’t have to give up an eccentric personality and become someone else once they start school and take their first steps into adulthood. We all need playfulness, humor and imagination. Imagination and joy create enthusiasm, which both children and adults need in their private life, at school and at work. With this movie I encourage children and also adults to play, imagine and laugh as much as they need to.

In the spring of 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant occurs an explosion. At the same time a girl called Mimi arrives to a small village in western Finland, and immediately fills the life of a 15-year-old Mariia with radiating light. Twenty years later Mariia returns home to take care of her sick mother, and memories start coming back, even though she tries to fight it. The summer Mariia and Mimi got to spend together two decades ago, was full of fierce joy of discovering what life could perhaps be like. The love they had was magical and powerful, but Mariia couldn’t save neglected Mimi from herself – after the summer was over, she committed suicide. Years after the tragedy, Mariia tries to remember the light so that she can also accept the dark. And finally forgive herself.

Director’s Statement: Light Light Light is a film about love and forgiveness, and about finding and losing hope. And how sometimes you just can’t save someone even if you love them, because maybe you’re fifteen and maybe there are things that fifteen-year-olds shouldn’t, or even couldn’t do. But they do know how to love, often more fiercely than the rest of us. So put on your bracelets, ignore the radiating fallout, dance, shout, let yourself sink between her legs. And live. Shine your light and live.

Wonderland
2017
Wonderland Image

Helena’s husband has gone off with a younger woman. Christmas is coming, life is slow and nothing is as it used to be. Helena’s best friend Ulli talks her into spending Christmas at the only destination they can afford and that still has room. They are looking forward to an old-time Christmas in the country just among women. Christmas at the organic farm is hosted by two young fledgling farmers for whom even offering farm accommodation provides a new opportunity for communal togetherness. As the days of the Christmas season pass, the lives of the guests, as well as the hosts, unexpectedly take a completely new turn and the women of Wonderland face life’s big questions.

Director’s Statement: Wonderland is primarily a story about the difficulty of changing course. About how hard it may be to accept that you made the wrong choice at some point, or that someone (or something) that you gave your all to no longer feels the same. How much easier would it be to just continue struggling towards a goal you set for yourself a long time ago? How scary and humiliating is it to admit that you got it wrong? “The fact that something ends doesn’t mean it was all pointless. It just ends.”

The Guardian Angel
2018
The Guardian Angel Image

The Guardian Angel is a psychological drama/thriller about a man who used hypnosis to turn another man into a robber and a murderer. The story, based on true happenings in Copenhagen in 1951, follows the incredible investigation of these crimes as a young investigator becomes obsessed with catching the psychological manipulator, in a battle of minds and wills. Focused on a single, fascinating case of an actual crime, the story uses this situation to suggest deeper issues of how present-day systems manipulate all of us, and to explore the mass mind of the modern world.

Director’s Statement: Increasingly blatant examples of invisible manipulation keep appearing for example through religious and political movements, as well as social media. I am concerned that people’s mass-minded nature is repeatedly abused for purely negative means. This will inevitably turn our environment into a cold and calculating place, and simultaneously prevent people from developing as independently thinking beings. One key objective of the film is to reinforce individual modes of thought by questioning the environment’s influence.

The Violin Player
2018
The Violin Player Image

A celebrated violin player, Karin, has to end her stellar career after a car accident makes her fingers stop working their magic. She starts teaching students who are twenty years younger than her, only to find herself falling in love with Antti, one of her students. They are not an easy match, both being passionate about the music and overly ambitious about their careers. The Violin Player is a romantic drama about giving up on your dreams and letting your ambitions lead you.

Director’s Statement: The Violin Player is a story about overwhelming ambitions, the impossibility of abandoning your dreams and the intensity of reaching for those dreams. I want my main characters, Karin and Antti, to cross their social and moral boundaries. They have to and they will search for the point where they never believed they would go. The ambition to be good at what they do will drive them to hurt other people, to humiliate and be humiliated. I recognise myself in these characters.

Void
2018
Void Image

Eero is a writer, whose career is in a downward spiral, and he is badly struggling to write his new novel. Pihla is an ambitious actress on the verge of an international breakthrough. Neither of them is willing to sacrifice their careers even though their relationship is doing worse than ever. Eero ends up resorting to unusual, desperate measures in order to get his career going again. The determined Pihla decides to juggle her career with her new role as a mother. But is there room in their relationship for these grandiose plans of theirs? Void is a tragic, kooky, and exhilarating film about the price of success and the agony of failure. The film laughs warmly at the seriousness of art and work, and at situations where your partner just doesn’t get it.

East of Sweden
2018
East of Sweden Image

Francis has escaped through Europe, but when he gets on a northbound night train from Helsinki, there is a sudden twist in his journey. He ends up in the same bedroom with Jere, a man hardened by the world, and a stowaway who forces Francis and Jere to join forces and make an unexpected decision. At the same time in Oulu, Vera breaks up with the unpredictable father of her child. All of these people want to move forward in life, but fate has other plans in store for them: when the father of Vera’s child disappears without a trace, the destinies of these three people become inevitably tangled together.

Director’s Statement: It’s hard for us to accept that luck plays such a big role in our lives. We have adopted the idea that we all hold the key to a good life. However, nothing puts our morals to the test more than bad luck. Someone might say that our lives are steered by coincidence, not by free will. Sometimes you just end up being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And then there is something even worse: if you end up being in the right place at the wrong time.

Wheels of Freedom
2018
Wheels of Freedom Image

Being alive and having a life are two different things for Ville Jaaranto. Freedom as his dream and equality on his agenda, he sets to travel across Europe on his power wheelchair. While on his journey, he comes to realise that neither him nor the world around him is quite ready for it. Ville’s budget runs out fast, and the relationships with his assistants become strained as no one really knows why they are on this journey. After all, what is Ville’s dream? To get to Lisbon or to be able to decide about his own life? Wheels of Freedom is a road movie with a comedic touch, a journey through Finland towards Lisbon, as seen in one’s dreams and that doesn’t even exist. Crazy dreams are the best cure for a mundane life.

Waiting for Barcelona
2018
Waiting for Barcelona Image

Barcelona’s labyrinthine streets are the epitome of romantic city life – as long as you don’t live on them. But 27-year old Gambian Mou does and has lived homeless for 10 years around Las Ramblas. A love affair with an American gives him hope of a new life, but the mental pressures catch up with his otherwise so positive spirit. At the same time hundreds of other paperless Africans try to provide for themselves by selling fake products to tourists without legal permissions – something that the local authorities do not take friendly. An upbeat film about one of Europe’s invisible lives, Waiting for Barcelona shows us a world of suffering and dreams in the outskirts of a city that’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.

Director’s Statement: Waiting for Barcelona is a story about perseverance and the things that we all share as human-beings. Besides its humanitarian themes, the film also portraits a city with its millions of stories – how they all are important pieces in forming this perplexing place. The film is an honest and cinematically stylised look into the world of our protagonists. I believe that a film like this could only be done in Barcelona, as it provides a scenery and a setting unlike anything else found in Europe.

Rooted with Wings
2018
Rooted with Wings Image

A dance documentary that explores the work of internationally acclaimed choreographer and dancer Tero Saarinen, granting the viewer a unique impression of this extraordinary artist’s creative process. Featuring stunningly captured dance sequences and behind-the-scenes material from around the globe, the film brings to light how Saarinen’s dance works evolve from an idea or concept into a finished performance. In a turbulent world that fetishizes technology, change and constant online availability, Saarinen embraces a philosophy of awareness, presence in the moment and centered physicality.

Director’s Statement: Tero Saarinen is a contemporary choreographer who believes in the power of dance in itself. His dance works are always highly visual and poetic, but his way of working and communicating is very straightforward and approachable. At the center of his practice is the belief that dance can touch something ancient; something timeless; something deep at the core of our shared humanity. This is a documentary with no ‘talking heads’ – Saarinen, his dance and the moving image speak for themselves.

Eastern Memories
2018
Eastern Memories Image

Eastern Memories is an unexpected road movie into the far east of Mongolia and Japan. Seamlessly intertwining the past and the present into a visually stunning journey of adventure and exploration, love and death, conspiracies and the fall of nations. All told by a dead Finn from the distant north.

Director’s Statement: History and time are curious things. Both are experienced in different ways in different cultures. Time in the west is a singular linear line, for the buddhists it’s a circular existence. Our thinking has become quarterly and short-sighted, the past and the future are being erased. The experience of time and how it has changed during the modern period, is a key element of Eastern Memories – it’s a window into time and history, a glimpse of humanity and the good and bad in all of us.

Comrade, Where Are You Today?
2016
Comrade, Where Are You Today? Image

In 1988 Kirsi Marie Liimatainen heads for the GDR to study Marxism-Leninism at the international youth academy “Wilhelm Pieck”. Students come from around the world – they are functionaries, freedom fighters and activists. The concept of international solidarity is convincing, but the real socialism is marked by contradictions and the gap between theory and reality is obvious. In the summer of 1989 the course ends – a few months later the Berlin Wall falls. 24 years later, Kirsi Marie sets out on a cinematic journey to Germany, Bolivia, Chile, Lebanon and South Africa to meet up once more with her former fellow students. What remains of their dream of revolution? Are there any utopias left, and which are worth fighting for?

Director’s Statement: Comrade, Where Are You Today? is a personal documentary, which tries to find answers to the initial attraction and later decline of the international left movement. It’s a journey through time and space: from the belief in international solidarity to the disappointment in a world without ideals and, finally, the eternal quest for justice and fairness.

The Twin
2020
The Twin Image

Some secrets are so evil you need to bury them twice… Every parent’s worst nightmare is just the beginning for Rachel’s ordeal as in the aftermath of a tragic accident, she and her husband Anthony decide to move to the other side of the world to focus on their surviving twin son Elliot. What begins as a time of healing and isolation in the Scandinavian countryside turns into a desperate battle for the very soul of their son as an entity claiming to be his dead twin brother takes over Elliot – setting Rachel on a diabolical journey to unravel the horrible truth about her twin son.

Director’s Statement: The Twin draws from the great horror classics we all love – and while committed to entertain (and frankly scare the heck out of you), we also want to make it intense, elegant and honest. Raw but relatable. At its core, it’s a story about how living in denial can ultimately crush you. How protecting your loved ones can end up hurting them the most. The most destructive prison is the one you build around yourself – and yet, inside it, you can still be happy. If that isn’t pure horror, I don’t know what is.

Euthanizer
2017
Euthanizer Image

What song would you like to die to? A psychotic, animal loving pet euthanizer, Veijo Haukka, delivers justice to careless pet owners, until he confronts a gang of violent thugs who seek bloody revenge.

Director’s Statement: When I started to write Euthanizer, I thought it was a violent film about the stupidity of middle-aged men. During the process of making the film, I realised that for me, the films message is: The world will be burned by men of principles. Or maybe it’s just how I think of the world nowadays. Who knows. Euthanizer will give you different thoughts and ways to read it, and everyone is true. And of course we didn’t harm any animals.

Moomins and The Winter Wonderland
2017
Moomins and The Winter Wonderland Image

Moomintroll won’t hibernate; he wants to explore the winter instead of having his winter slumber as usually. He finds out that winter is very different from what he had imagined. Strangest creatures wander amidst the snowdrifts while midwinter darkness surrounds the Moominvalley. Moreover, an eccentric guest is soon to appear. This guest requires many measures, and is called Christmas”– Hemulen tells astounded Moomintroll.

Directors’ Statements:

Jakub Wroński: The idea of making a creative remake of this Moomin story meant working closely with the already existing footage. It may seem restricting, but for me, it’s actually challenging and fascinating. The original animation is full of magic and mystery, and vivid, abstract characters.

Ira Carpelan: I think the understanding of the Moomin atmosphere and way of thinking are key issues in the production. Nobody would want to lose that ambience. It’s the core to convey, and above all to maintain throughout the whole narrative.

Unknown Soldier
2017
Unknown Soldier Image

Unknown Soldier by Aku Louhimies is the story of an infantry unit’s tour of duty that lasts for more than three years during the Finnish Continuation War. The film is based on the classic novel by Väinö Linna. The film is the story of Rokka, Kariluoto, Koskela, Hietanen, and their brothers-in-arms. It shows how friendship, humour and the will to live unite these men on their way there and back. The war changes the lives of each of the soldiers as well as the lives of those on the home front, and also leaves its mark on the entire nation.

Director’s Statement: Unknown Soldier is not about glorifying the war. I wanted to make it as realistic as possible, to be able to really look at how people change in the midst of a crisis. I hope it reminds us of the wars and crisis that still goon around us, and what people in those areas go through. Ordinary people, ordinary families. For me, Unknown Soldier is a movie about peace. About wanting peace.

One Last Deal
2018
One Last Deal Image

72-year-old art dealer Olavi sees an old painting at an auction and suspects that it’s much more valuable than its starting price. At the same time, Olavi’s daughter Lea – whom he hasn’t seen for years – asks him to help her with his teenage grandson Otto. Together with Otto, Olavi starts to investigate the background of the painting. They find out that the painting is called Christ and was painted by Ilya Repin. Olavi manages to buy the painting, but when the auction house realizes that there has been a mistake with the original pricing, they turn against him. To fulfil his dream, the old dealer must face both the auction house and his own past mistakes.

Director’s Statement: One Last Deal tells the tale of an elderly art dealer searching for the ultimate piece of art in order to prove himself. But is it really worthwhile? Risking everything by going out there one more time to challenge destiny? As a director I’m always looking for stories that I can connect to. We all hope for a second chance in life, but what if we would actually get it? Would we be able to change things?

Man and a Baby
2017
Man and a Baby Image

The life of Antti Pasanen, a journalist, is in order. His wife is just about to give birth. Until, in front of the Maternity Hospital, everything changes. With a sniveling bundle in his arms, Antti sees the tail lights of a taxi fading away, with his wife Pia in the backseat and their future as a family in jeopardy. The life in terms of the baby begins and little does Antti know what it demands from him…

Director’s Statement: As a director, I want to approach parenting clichés, expectations and delights from the comical angle, through the light and airy film scenes. A strong goal is that the viewer of Man and a Baby will be able to participate in this father’s moments of joy, horror and despair, and also share his love.

M
2018
M Image

M is a work of art that explores the relationship between sexuality and death. These two appear to be opposite forces, but in fact they merge in all of us, disguising the fear of death or the desire to die, the world of Eros and Thanatos.

Director’s Statement: This work has been a true challenge and an obsession. Making films that are unique pieces of art is what I want to do in the future. I have found a medium that challenges me to the limit and gives me a chance to work with all of my passions; writing, visuality and music, but most importantly, emotion.

Laugh or Die
2018
Laugh or Die Image

Laugh or Die is based on true events. In the harsh conditions of the Mjölö Island prison camp a group of actors of the Workers’ Theatre, sentenced to death, rehearsed a comedy play poking fun at the prospective German king of Finland. In our filmentertaining the visiting Commander of the German troops will be rewarded with a chance to avoid being shotThe film’s lead, Parikka, is an ambivalent main character: a famous actor who receives a death sentence for a horrible crime. His story is about the insolence of a comedy maker, freedom and the last chance of finding reconciliation within oneself through a common effort. Without satire, culture will die.

Director’s Statement: Laugh or Die is a project especially close to my heart. I have a past in the theatre, both as a stage actor as well as a director. The film tells about the fears I experienced as a performer: what it’s like to perform with everything at stake, and succeed by a whisker. This film is about power of laughter. Even in oppressive circumstances any community can survive if it knows how to address things through comedy. Hilarious and cruel. Touching and outrageous. These were my keywords when making this film.

Heavy Trip
2018
Heavy Trip Image

Turo is stuck in a small village in Northern Finland. The only glimpses of light in his life are provided by his amateur metal band, Impaled Rektum. He and his friends have played for 12 years without having a single gig. The guys get a surprise visitor from Norway: the head of Northern Damnation, a huge metal festival. They decide that it’s now or never. After a miserable warm-up gig Impaled Rektum breaks up just to get together again. They steal a van, a corpse and a coffin from the local cemetery, a new drummer from the local mental hospital and flee to Norway. As they are escaping Finnish police, they have to face the Norwegian Army and its notorious “Delta troppen” in order to get to play their first real gig.

Director’s Statement: We think that guys like the band in Heavy Trip deserve their story to be told. Guys, who in spite of probably never getting rich or famous (and probably never getting many girls), play THIS music. Just for the love of it. With this film, we wanted to make the audience laugh. And by this we mean to really laugh. Not just have a smirk for some intelligent insightful notion about something “meaningful”. But to laugh your ass off.

Hayflower, Quiltshoe and The Rubens Brother
2017
Hayflower, Quiltshoe and The Rubens Brother Image

Hayflower and Quiltshoe’s family is about to go on vacation. Kattilakoski Mother Hannah has planned a magical week in a luxurious villa. But by chance, the whole family winds up in the wrong “villa”, next door to a cabin occupied by local town police officers. The officers realize the mix-up in time and pose as artists, in hopes of being left alone by the visitors. Hayflower and Quiltshoe’s suspicions are woken immediately, and great spy adventure ensue. When on top of everything some prison escapees turn out to be hiding nearby, misunderstandings lead to a colorful adventure comedy.

Director’s Statement: Hayflower and Quiltshoe were first introduced in Tiina and Sinikka Nopola’s inspirational books when I was just a kid. The writers welcomed me with open arms, right into the heart-warmingly warped reality of Hayflower and Quiltshoe. Before we knew it, our unified vision was clear. We wanted to create a comedy that celebrated the quirky characters from the book. Our goal was to make a film that portrayed a story brimming with fun disguises and white lies that lead to hilarious outcomes, a film that would bring laughter to both adults and children alike.

Super Furball
2018
Super Furball Image

Emilia is an ordinary divorce kid. She goes to school, lives with her Mom and sometimes her Dad, and her life couldn’t be more ordinary. But one day, Emilia’s pet guinea pig bites her finger. Emilia gets a secret ability to transform into furry superhero, who can fly and solve problems with her superpowers. At the same time, the herrings in the nearby Baltic Sea bay are screaming for help. Poisoned water has made them irate, and they’re threatening the peace and quiet in all of town. As the superhero, Emilia takes on to salvage the situation and finds ways to be more courageous in her own life.

Director’s Statement: Emilia’s imagination adds colour to her bleak suburban neighbourhood of grey concrete, and allows her to become the Super Furball: a furry and utterly awkward superhero. With a whiff of anarchy, it’s not simply a neat, brightly coloured vision of a happy childhood. Although it’s a children’s story, it can attract parents too, thanks to relatable characters, absurd observations and comic references. Through this adventure, Emilia is actually solving her own problems. After seeking popularity at the cost of a friendship, she learns to stand up for herself and freely embraces embarrassment. In this sense, it’s a story of growing up. Which is a goal familiar to all of us, although achieved with varying levels of success.

Winning Ticket
2018
Winning Ticket Image

Winning Ticket is a drama comedy about Eevi, who wins the jackpot in lottery. Eevi works in a beauty parlor, leading a humdrum life in the suburbs of Helsinki with his husband Kari, a wannabe rocker. After the jackpot, the couple agrees to carry on with their lives as before, without telling anyone about the stroke of luck. But the money is burning holes in their pockets and that’s hard to hide. Their opinions about themselves and their relationship are put to the test. Everyone seems now to have a strange attitude towards them – although they try to pretend to be the same people as before. Do millions bring happiness after all?

Happier Times, Grump
2018
Happier Times, Grump Image

The Grump wants to die because all the work is done; the meaning of life is gone. But just as his own coffin is being finished, a new life appears to the Grump. His grandchild Sofia, 17, is in trouble and needs the stubbornness and wisdom of her grandfather and the warmth of the fireplace. The Grump gets a new meaning to his life – and a major secret. A stubborn old man and a young city girl get together and two halves grow up to be more than one whole human being. Happier times, Grump is an amusing and heartfelt movie about a serious topic.

Director’s Statement: Life surprises our main characters and forces them to look at themselves a little closer. We can’t always choose all the people with whom we go on this journey of life, and sometimes we just have to accept ourselves and them, even with all the mistakes. As long as there is love, everything is possible.

Boys Who Like Girls
2018
Boys Who Like Girls Image

Teenager Ved comes from a violent home in the Mumbai slums. When he joins a project aiming to foster healthy masculinity, he begins to realise there may be a brighter path for his future than the one paved by his abusive, controlling father. One of Ved’s mentors is Harish, a gentle man in his 50s who has dedicated his life to abolishing toxic masculinity. Through the support Ved gets, he takes his first wobbly steps into adult life while developing an unlikely new passion: dancing. Boys Who Like Girls is a coming of age story set in the aftermath of the infamous 2012 Delhi gang rape and the rise of the #MeToo movement. The world is in the midst of furious discussion about gendered violence and what it means to be a man. Will Ved’s generation of boys be the first that actually likes girls?

Director’s Statement: My film was born in the aftermath of the 2012 Delhi gang rape. This exceptionally violent case made me feel hopeless about male/female relationships, but one day I saw light at the end of the tunnel. I read an article about men in India who were fighting misogyny alongside women, as allies. They made me thankful and relieved. I wanted to tell their story, to give female viewers the same sense of hope I felt, and to invite male viewers into the gender discussion, only this time not as antagonists.
